Weekend Projects: 8 DIY Ideas That Will Make a Big Impact in a Room

Make a big impact in your home with a small budget with these awesome tips this weekend!

Know you'll have a few hours strung together this weekend to tackle a DIY project or two? Looking for something that will dramatically change the look of a room? We've gathered some of our favorite projects that take an afternoon to a full weekend to complete. One might possibly inspire a room makeover this weekend for you! We looked for challenging but doable ideas, some probably just for homeowners but plenty that renters can try, too!

Add texture with a reclaimed wood wall
This classic project is for homeowners unless you've got a very understanding landlord, but either way, this could be a more convincing way of adding architectural interest to a house than some of the less-permanent suggestions we've provided before. And we love how in this project it's not the entire wall that's covered with material; that makes it more flexible depending on how much time or effort you want to spend on it!

Cover an unattractive kitchen or bathroom counter top with concrete
There are actually a couple of tutorials on the Internet on how to do this. (Those looking to completely DIY a counter top from scratch have options, too.). Those not fans of the concrete look probably won't want to delve into this project, but those who are looking to easily cover up a counter they hate with a modern material might find inspiration in how these homeowners have done it successfully. Just pay attention to the part about sealing your new counters — seems important for long-lasting material.

Build custom, industrial-inspired shelving or modern, versatile shelving
This is an old idea, but such a classic project that could look nice in just about any style of home and be an amazing looking piece while also being functional. An alternative but similar project can be found in the post HowTo Build An Ace Hotel-Inspired Plumbing Pipe Shelf. Or if you're looking for something more modern than industrial, try this pegboard project that has quickly become a new favorite.

Cover up an ugly ceiling fixture with a DIY drum shade
This affordable and easy DIY drum shade project is a simple fix that you could make in an afternoon that would have a pretty huge impact on the look of a room, without doing any permanent damage if you're a renter.

Paint a room a new, bold wall color
Have you noticed all the posts I've been writing involving bold wall colors? Maybe it's because I can't paint in my rental that I just want to live vicariously through all of you. But it's also because I believe in pushing yourself and think a fun color could make a room (and the people in it) happy!

Not in the mood to paint a whole room? Try just the window trim
You could get wild and go for a bold color (and then show us photos if you do!). But even just putting a nice new paint job on your architectural details like trim will have a huge impact on your whole room feeling clean and fresh!

Build a rolling privacy door
If you've got a big open space that needs some privacy, a DIY sliding door is awesome. But would also work great as a visual divider in a space or an architectural detail in a featureless house.

Build some furniture
This is a favorite of mine because it's so simple and adaptable. It's for a table and bench, but you could adapt it to be for a modern side table, or a coffee table. Made out of wood, the possibilities of what the finish could be are pretty pretty wide open. If you've been on the hunt for a special something in a certain part of a room of your house, it may be that you need to custom make yourself a piece of furniture.
